The Swiss dental tariff (Dentotar)
In Switzerland, dental care is billed according to the Dentotar tariff, a point-based system established by the Swiss Dental Association (SSO). This tariff ensures complete cost transparency for patients.
Each dental procedure is assigned a number of tariff points. The final cost is calculated by multiplying these points by the point value, set by the practice. Rates may vary between cantons and practitioners.
At Studio Smile, we apply a point value of CHF 1.20, in accordance with the SSO recommendations for the Canton of Geneva.
Insurance
Basic insurance (LAMal)
Basic health insurance does not cover routine dental care in Switzerland. Only treatments related to a serious illness or resulting from an accident are covered.
- Serious diseases of the masticatory system
- Dental care necessitated by a serious general illness
- Dental care following an accident (LAA coverage)
Complementary insurance
Complementary dental insurance can reimburse a significant portion of your costs. It is advisable to subscribe as early as possible, ideally from childhood, as admission conditions become stricter with age.
- Reimbursement of 50% to 75% of routine care
- Annual cap generally between CHF 1,000 and CHF 5,000
- Orthodontic coverage for children up to 18–20 years
Tip: subscribe from childhood to avoid dental admission exams.
Accident (LAA / SUVA)
Dental care following an accident is fully covered by accident insurance (LAA), whether the accident is work-related or not.
- 100% coverage of dental costs after an accident
- Report the accident to the insurer within 48 hours
- Keep any dental fragments and seek treatment quickly
