Orthodontic Retention in Geneva
Why retention is essential
Teeth have a memory. The periodontal ligament fibres tend to move teeth back to their original position. This relapse phenomenon is natural and inevitable without retention.
Retention must be worn for life or at least for several years. It is a minimal investment compared to the cost and duration of the initial orthodontic treatment.
Types of retention
Bonded wire (fixed retention)
A thin metal wire is bonded to the inner surface of the teeth, from canine to canine. Invisible from the outside, it holds the teeth in place 24/7.
Night retainer
A custom-made clear retainer is worn at night. It maintains the dental arch and also protects against bruxism.
Combined retention
Permanent bonded wire plus night retainer during the first months. The best guarantee of stability.
Regular follow-up
Check-ups at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year after removal, then once a year to verify the integrity of the device.
