Adult orthodontics in Geneva: Is it too late?
No. It’s not too late. That’s the short answer.
Orthodontics is not just for teenagers. Teeth move at any age. Bone remodels itself throughout life. An adult aged 30, 40, 50 or 60 can perfectly benefit from orthodontic treatment with excellent results.
In Switzerland, the demand for adult orthodontics is exploding. Orthodontic practices in Geneva treat more and more patients aged 30 to 55. The reason is simple: discreet solutions now exist. Adults no longer need to wear visible metal braces.
At Studio Smile in Chêne-Bougeries, we support dozens of Geneva adults each year in their orthodontic journey. This guide answers all your questions.
Why start as an adult?
The motivations of adults are different from those of adolescents. Here are the most common reasons.
Aesthetics. An aligned smile inspires confidence. Studies show that people with harmonious smiles are perceived as more competent and nicer. In Geneva, an international and professional city, appearance matters.
Functional comfort. Misaligned teeth make chewing difficult. They cause muscle tension, pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and headaches. Correcting the alignment relieves these symptoms.
Hygiene made easy. Crowded teeth are difficult to brush properly. Plaque builds up in inaccessible areas. The risk of cavities and periodontitis increases. Alignment simplifies daily hygiene.
Prosthetic preparation. Before placing implants, crowns or veneers, prior alignment may be necessary. It optimizes the prosthetic result and avoids aesthetic compromises.
Catching up on incomplete treatment. Many adults wore a device as a teenager but did not wear their retainer. The teeth have moved again. A new treatment, often shorter than the first, can correct the situation.
Options for adults
Adult orthodontics has evolved. Today’s solutions are discreet, comfortable and compatible with an active professional life.
Clear aligners (Invisalign). This is the preferred option for adults. The aligners are almost invisible, removable and comfortable. They correct the majority of malocclusions. The treatment is planned in 3D with a simulation of the final result. At Studio Smile, this is the solution we most often offer to adults.
Ceramic brackets. More discreet than metal brackets, they are tooth-colored. The thread can also be white. It is a good alternative when Invisalign is not indicated.
Lingual orthodontics. The brackets are glued to the inside of the teeth. Totally invisible from the outside. It is the most discreet option but also the most expensive and the most demanding in terms of adaptation.
Orthodontic mini screws. For complex cases requiring additional anchorage, small temporary screws are placed in the bone. They allow dental movements that are impossible with braces alone.
The particularities of orthodontics in adults
Treating an adult is not the same as treating a teenager. Your orthodontist must take into account certain specificities.
The bone is denser. In adults, bone remodeling is slower. Tooth movements take longer. The forces applied should be lighter and more progressive.
Periodontal problems. Many adults have the beginnings of periodontitis (gingival recession, periodontal pockets). Orthodontics can only begin once the periodontal situation has stabilized. Thorough scaling and prior periodontal treatment are often necessary.
Existing restorations. Crowns, bridges, implants modify the orthodontic approach. The implanted teeth do not move. The treatment plan must integrate these constraints.
Realistic expectations. An adult cannot always achieve the result that a growing adolescent would achieve. Some skeletal disharmonies can only be corrected by orthognathic surgery. Your orthodontist will clearly explain to you what is possible and what is not.
Duration of treatment
The duration depends on the complexity of the case, not the age of the patient.
Simple cases (slight congestion, closure of diastemas): 6 to 12 months. Moderate cases (moderate crowding, correction of overbite): 12 to 18 months. Complex cases (severe malocclusion, prosthetic preparation): 18 to 30 months.
At Studio Smile, a forecast schedule is established from the first consultation. Regular checks every 6 to 8 weeks allow progress to be monitored and treatment to be adjusted if necessary.

Restraint: the key to lasting results
Orthodontic treatment does not end when the appliance is removed. Restraint is essential to maintain the result. Without retainer, the teeth tend to return to their initial position. This is orthodontic recurrence.
Two types of restraint are used:
The bonded wire (fixed retainer). A fine metal wire is bonded to the inside of the front teeth, generally from canine to canine. It is invisible and comfortable. It stays in place indefinitely.
The retaining splint (nighttime device). A transparent splint worn every night for at least a year, then gradually reduced. Some orthodontists recommend lifelong nighttime wear to ensure stability.
At Studio Smile, we emphasize the importance of restraint. It is she who protects your investment.
FAQ
Can we do orthodontics at 50? Absolutely. Age is not an obstacle. The only condition is that the gums and bone are healthy. A prior periodontal assessment is essential. In Geneva, we regularly treat patients aged 50 to 65 at Studio Smile.
Is adult orthodontics reimbursed in Switzerland? No. The LAMal does not cover orthodontics in adults. Only certain supplementary insurances can reimburse part of the costs. Most limit coverage to patients under 18 years old. Check your contract.
Do teeth move less quickly in adults? Movements are slightly slower than in adolescents, because the bone is denser. But the difference in total duration is often only a few months. The regularity of wearing aligners and keeping appointments are the determining factors.
Does Invisalign work for complex adult cases? Yes, for the vast majority of cases. Invisalign Comprehensive with attachments and elastics treats complex malocclusions. In some very severe cases, a fixed appliance or a combination of the two approaches may be recommended. Your orthodontist at Studio Smile will evaluate the best option.
