Dental Emergencies in Geneva: What to do and When to consult?

A dental emergency always happens at the wrong time. A Saturday evening. On vacation. At the office. The pain is intense. Stress mounts. You don’t know what to do.

This guide gives you the answers. What are real dental emergencies? What to do while waiting for the dentist. Where to consult in Geneva. How to act quickly and well.

At Studio Smile, a dental practice in Chêne-Bougeries, we reserve slots for dental emergencies. Our goal: to receive you as soon as possible.

What is a dental emergency?

Not all tooth pain is an emergency. But some situations require rapid attention. Here are the cases that require emergency consultation.

Toothache (acute pulpitis). The pain is violent, throbbing, spontaneous. It radiates into the jaw, ear or temple. Conventional painkillers are no longer enough. This is a sign that the dental pulp is affected. Endodontic treatment is often necessary.

Tooth abscess. A swelling appears on the gum or cheek. The area is hot, red, painful. Pus may flow. Abscess is a bacterial infection. Without treatment, the infection can spread. It’s a medical emergency.

Broken or fractured tooth. Following an impact, a fall or a sporting accident. If the fracture exposes the pulp (red part visible), it is an emergency. If a piece of tooth has come loose, store it in milk or saliva.

The tooth expelled (avulsion). The tooth has completely come out of its socket. Time is running out. If the tooth is replanted within 30 minutes, the chances of survival are maximum. Hold the tooth by the crown, never by the root. Place it in milk or in the mouth (under the tongue) and rush to the dentist.

Post-operative bleeding. After an extraction, heavy bleeding that does not stop after 30 minutes of pressure with a compress is abnormal. Consult immediately.

Loosening of a crown or bridge. Less urgent, but to be treated in the following days. The prepared tooth is vulnerable without its protection. Keep the crown and avoid chewing on the affected side.

What to do while waiting for the dentist?

The right reaction in the first minutes can change everything. Here are the actions to adopt depending on the situation.

In case of intense pain: Take a painkiller based on ibuprofen (400 to 600 mg) or paracetamol (1,000 mg). Never put aspirin directly on the gum. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the cheek for 15 minutes every hour. Avoid hot, extreme cold and sweet foods.

In case of abscess: Never puncture the abscess yourself. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Take a painkiller. Consult urgently. If you have a fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to a hospital emergency room.

In case of broken tooth: Collect the fragment if possible. Store it in milk or saline. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. Apply a cold compress to the cheek.

In the event of an expelled tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown. Don’t touch the root. Do not clean it with soap. Place it back in the socket if possible. Otherwise, store it in milk. Consult immediately. Every minute counts.

On-call dental clinic. On weekends and public holidays, a dental on-call service operates in Geneva. The number is available via the Société Odontologique de Genève and 144.

144. If in doubt about the severity, call 144. The operators will direct you to the appropriate structure.

When is it really urgent?

Not all dental pain is a life-threatening emergency. Here’s how to assess the situation.

Consult the same day: unbearable toothache, abscess with swelling, broken tooth with pulpal exposure, expelled tooth, post-operative bleeding.

Consult within 48 hours: chipped tooth without pain, loose crown, fallen filling, moderate but persistent pain.

Make an appointment this week: sensitivity to cold that lasts, gums that bleed when brushing, slight pain when chewing.

How to prevent dental emergencies?

The majority of dental emergencies are preventable. Regular follow-up with the dentist helps detect problems before they become critical.

Visit your dentist twice a year. Have cavities treated as soon as they appear. Wear a mouthguard during contact sports. Do not bite into hard objects (ice cubes, pens, nails). Do not delay in case of pain, even slight.

At Studio Smile in Chêne-Bougeries, our regular check-ups include a complete examination, digital x-rays and a personalized assessment. Prevention is better than emergency intervention.

Cost of an emergency dental consultation in Geneva

The cost depends on the treatment needed. The emergency consultation itself is generally charged between 100 and 200 CHF. The associated treatment (filling, extraction, root treatment) is billed additionally according to the TARMED/SSO scale.

At Studio Smile, we inform you of the estimated cost during the telephone assessment. No surprise. Installment payment solutions are available for large treatments.

FAQ

What to do in case of toothache at night in Geneva? Take a painkiller (ibuprofen or paracetamol). Apply cold to the cheek. Avoid lying down completely (elevate your head). Call Studio Smile as soon as the office opens the next morning. In case of significant swelling or fever, contact 144.

My child broke a tooth, what should I do? Collect the piece of tooth and store it in milk. If it is a permanent tooth, consult immediately. If it is a baby tooth, reimplantation is not recommended, but a consultation is still necessary to check that the permanent tooth is not affected.

Are dental emergencies covered by insurance? LAMal only covers dental care in the event of an accident or serious illness of the masticatory system. If the emergency results from an accident, your accident insurance (LAA) or your supplementary insurance can intervene. Check your coverage.

How long does it take to get an emergency appointment? At Studio Smile, we strive to accommodate emergencies the same day. Call us as soon as possible. The sooner we are informed, the sooner we will take care of you.

Is a dental abscess dangerous? Yes. An untreated abscess can cause sepsis, facial cellulitis, or a respiratory tract infection. If the abscess is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or neck swelling, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
