Oral Surgery — Studio Smile Geneva
Oral surgery covers the treatment and management of various oral pathologies that require expert skill from the practitioner. Oral surgery concerns teeth, gums and underlying bone and includes procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction, bone grafting and biopsies of swollen tissue.
Wisdom teeth or impacted canines
Wisdom teeth often need monitoring because they can present in inadequate positions: either impacted (they do not have space to erupt and may push other teeth) or semi-impacted (they only partially emerge).
Extraction of wisdom teeth is common. The sooner they are managed, the lower the risk of complications. We therefore recommend checking their position from adolescence and anticipating their trajectory. A check-up at least once a year is recommended.
This procedure can be performed under nitrous oxide (also called laughing gas) which has a relaxing effect on the patient. In addition, a local anaesthetic is administered during the procedure so no pain will be felt.

Implants & Prosthetics
Implant or prosthetic placement is most often performed under local anaesthesia. Everything is done to make the procedure as painless and comfortable as possible.
By following your dentist's advice – regular brushing, interdental brushes and regular follow-up at the practice – post-operative issues are minimal. With good oral hygiene, an implant can last 20 years or more.
Implants and prosthetics are custom-made to respect the structure and aesthetics of your dentition. Studio Smile uses implants with a solid scientific and clinical track record (Straumann and Anthogyr from the Straumann group).
Impressions are taken using an ultra-precise digital scanner, avoiding the old paste impressions in the mouth. For crowns we work with Straumann, a world-renowned Swiss brand.

Bone Grafts
Sometimes after an accident with tooth loss or due to massive bone loss – during an extraction the loss can be around 60% – a bone graft must be considered. Plaque that is not regularly removed also accelerates bone loss. This loss increases not only oral complications but also the appearance of facial wrinkles (tissue sagging). Lack of bone mass can compromise implant placement.
To remedy the problem, we use bone grafting with membrane. It may sound daunting, but the procedure is less complicated than it seems. During the operative phase you will not feel anything. After the procedure, healing is rapid, so there is nothing to worry about.
The Studio Smile team is here for you. They explain every step clearly and support you throughout the procedure.

Periodontal Surgery
Where necessary, periodontal surgery can be performed to restore healthy oral mucosa. This procedure is recommended when the gums no longer sufficiently cover the teeth causing sensitivity to hot and cold and an increased risk of cavities. This phenomenon most often appears during gum recession (periodontitis).
Depending on the extent of recession, your dentist will choose between two techniques, namely:
Gum grafting which involves taking tissue from the palate and grafting it to the area of gum recession. In some cases it is possible to use a technique where tissue comes from a donor bank.
Flap surgery which is very effective for removing tartar and trapped food deposits under the tissue.
In two appointments you will have your smile back. The first is the surgical act itself and the second is a visit to remove the stitches and check that the graft is healing properly.
